Basics of English language skills

     English is like any other language. One can learn it as he/she has learnt his/her first language, by horning their language skills. There are four language skills which helps a learner learn a new language. 

• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing

     These skills are in chronological order. One has to master them accordingly. Here are some suggestion how one can improve English by acquiring each skils.

1) Listening skill

     To listen to something means hearing it with full attention. So, when you listen to a language being spoken your mind has to understand how words are being pronounced, intonations are used, how pauses are taken etc.

     Following are some suggestion for improvement of listening skill:

• Listen to native speakers speaking English. 
• Watch videos of your interest in English, that will help you more.
• Listen to online podcasts, they are good for relatively standard pronunciations.
• Watch movies or television in English. That will help you understand intonation more correctly.

2) Speaking skill

     Speaking is main skill required when you need to learn a language. When you can speak it you can actually process your thoughts in your language. It also gives you confidence.

     Following are some suggestion for improvement of speaking skill:

• Speaking can be perfected only when you listen to that language thoroughly.
• You can refine your speech once you start it.
• It needs many days to find your proper style.
• Sing along when you listen to English songs which will be good exercise for your tongue.

3) Reading skill

     Reading is the skill that is used most by a language learner. Reading doesn't include only words,vocabulary, sentence structure but also the tone and meaning of what is written.

     Following are some suggestion for improvement of listening skill:

• You can start reading primary therefore easy texts in new language.
• Fiction sustains your interest more. So, you can start by reading jokes, stories, anacdotes etc.
• When you can understand the tone behind a text or can see multiple layers of meaning, you can consider your reading skill to be adequate.

4) Writing skill

   

     Writing skill is harder than other skills as it is an expressive skill and requires other skills to be good. Writing something in a language requires an understanding of vocabulary and how a particular tone can be generated through certain style.

     Following are some suggestion for improvement of writing skill:

• Study how writing can be made simple.
• Always follow logical progression of meaning while expressing something.
• Always compare it to writing of advanced user of same language.

     These four skills can make you a proficient user of English without going to any classes or learning any comolex courses.
