Case for defense summary (sem 2 unit 1)

The case for defense is a short story by Graham Green. It is a court room drama, which means this story has scenes in court of justice and may feature judge, lawyers, accused, witnesses etc. In this story the scene is of a murder trial. Here are the facts to be noted before proceeding with the story.


  • murder victim- Mrs. Parker

This story is narrated by a person present in court, may a reporter. He tells us that murder took place around 2 am in the morning and all the witnesses had seen him fleeing from the crime scene. The notable thing about Adams was that he was a well built man with ugly face and bloodshot eyes. So, it was impossible to forget him. The case against him was very strong.

In the next part of the story, Lawyer for prosecution examines the prime witness, Mrs. Salmon. She answers very politely but firmly and has no doubt that it was Adams who had been there when she looked out of the window in the night of murder, dropping murder weapon and running. Then, lawyer for defense examines her. He asks question regarding her age and ability to see in dark. Mrs. Salmon replies that she had seen Adams in street light so there was no mistake in her testimony.

Then lawyer for defense present twin brother of the accused in the court and asks to witnesses if he was the one they had seen. As Adams and his brother were identical twins, no one could say for sure whom they had seen. So, Adams got acquitted on basis of lack evidence.

Third part of the story takes a reader into genre of fantastic. As we know that Adams is criminal and  remains unpunished, it frustrates us. But as soon as twin brothers go out in the open a sort of miracle happens. In the hustle of crowd, one of them is pushed to road where a moving bus hots him, resulting in instant death.

So, author tries to bring a happy ending to the story by punishing the criminal by justice of nature.
