Mason's Life is a short story by Kingsley Amis. It is a mind-bending story which makes a reader think about its content even after story ends.

This story is set in a London bar. Pettigrew comes to a table in the corner and asks person sitting there if could join him. That person agrees. Pettigrew introduces himself and asks other person his name, who amused by Pettigrew's behavior tells his name is George Herbert Mason. Then Pettigrew asks for his number. Mason reluctantly gives it to him which Pettigrew tries to remember. Next he insist that Mason has to take his number. To which Mason refuses. Pettigrew says that they should exchange a phrase which they can repeat over telephone next morning. This behavior irritates Mason. He demands an explanation.

Then what Pettigrew tells him is an extra-ordinary and somewhat a crazy idea. Pettigrew believes that he is asleep in his bed. This bar and people in it including Mason are fractions of his dream. But he knows that he is dreaming. So, he wants to check if there is another real person like him. So, he trying to exchange numbers and phrases to verify that person he met in dream is real or not.

Mason is perplexed at this idea at first but then laughs it off. He declares that he is not in any dream. He is a person who remembers his whole life, his family, his business etc in detail which not possible for a man born in dream. He even offers Pettigrew to take him to his home and break his illusion that it is a dream.

Pettigrew doesn't believe it and still thinks that it is a dream. He becomes agitated as his breathing becomes fast. When Mason asks what is wrong Pettigrew replies that telephone is ringing at his bedside and he is waking up. Before Mason can grasp this weird tale, he sees that Pettigrew's shape changing and disappearing in the air. He tries to grab him but Pettigrew vanishes and when Mason looks at his own hand. His hand also disappears with his own self like Pettigrew and nothing remains.
