Concord


  • Agreement or harmony between people or groups.
  • In grammar, it means harmony between two parts of a sentence.


If a sentence has a singular subject then verb has to be singular. If it is a plural then verb has to be plural.
-He is a good boy.
-They are good boys.

That means
Singular subject-singular verb
plural subject-plural verb

Here are some general rules to consider while filling blanks.

1) A phrase in between the subject and the verb - Singular

Ex.

  • The message of the stories is that we should be honest.
  • The center of all problems is that we don't try to find solutions.
  • The sentiment of our class is that we are given early leave.


2)  Two subjects connected by either/or or neither/nor - Singular

Ex.

  • Either he or she will lead the team.
  • Either bond or M is going to die.
  • Neither you or me was there.


3) Two subjects connected by 'and' - plural

Ex.

  • Harry and Ron are playing chess.
  • Table and chair are too old now.
  • Mukesh and Ramesh were eating.


4) Each, Everyone, Everybody, Anyone, Anybody, Somebody, Nobody, Someone, None, No one - Singular

Ex.

  • Everyone is waiting for next movie.
  • Someone has taken the car.
  • No one was there.


5) Plural subjects that calls for singular verbs(Distance, Currency, Time) - Singular

Ex.

  • Two kilometers is total distance between home and office.
  • Seven hundred rupees is final price for the keyboard.
  • Thirty minutes was the time given to us before break.


6) Collective nouns - Singular
Ex.

  • The school staff is standing on the stage.
  • The team of players has won.
  • The pack of wolves is running towards sheep.
